Regulations passengers need to know about carry-on baggage and checked baggage when traveling by plane.

Recently, Giao thong Newspaper has received many questions from readers about the security check procedure for checked baggage when traveling by plane.

Many readers said that because they did not understand the regulations on goods in checked baggage, when they entered the waiting room to board the plane, their names were called on the loudspeaker and asked to return to the security check counter. This made many passengers who encountered it for the first time worried or had their flights delayed.

Regarding this issue, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh – Deputy General Director of Jetstar Pacific said that passengers need to pay attention to the baggage regulations of the airlines. There have been many cases where customers had their flights delayed or canceled due to violations of baggage regulations.

Responding to readers’ questions, Mr. Bui Minh Dang, Deputy Head of the Transport Department, Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said: According to aviation regulations, the checked baggage of an individual passenger must be checked by that individual (except for some special cases). In case the aviation security control officer finds any suspicious signs, the checked baggage may be required to be visually inspected in the presence of the passenger who owns the baggage.

Therefore, when arranging checked baggage, passengers need to clearly understand the regulations of the carrier to avoid unnecessary trouble. Regulations on air baggage are divided into two types:

Checked baggage

Passengers should contact the airline to find out the size, weight, number of pieces of checked baggage allowed to be transported and the amount to be paid for checked baggage or excess baggage.

Passengers should note that they are not allowed to put the following items in their checked baggage, specifically: Explosives, explosive materials (bombs, mines, grenades, explosive materials, fireworks, etc.), bullets (except for cases of carrying for personal use and with specific regulations), flammable substances (gases, liquids, flammable solids, etc.).

For checked baggage, passengers are not restricted in carrying liquids as for carry-on baggage, however, they should be careful about carrying alcohol and alcoholic liquids (alcohol concentration from 24% to 70%: each person is not allowed to carry more than 5 liters in a container of no more than 5 liters; concentration above 70%: not allowed to carry).

Passengers should refer to specific regulations on liquids, restricted and prohibited items in checked baggage in Circular 01 and regulations of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam on the website of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (www.caa.gov.vn).

For fresh, perishable and smelly goods, airlines have their own regulations on transport restrictions and in case of acceptance for transport, there must be conditions on packaging, quantity and depending on the type of aircraft. Passengers should contact the airline in case they need to transport these types of goods.

For example: For Vietnam Airlines, each passenger is allowed to carry a maximum of 03 liters or 03kg of fish sauce, packed in plastic bottles and sealed tightly, the bottles placed in foam boxes must be securely packed to ensure that they are not crushed or broken during transport. Meanwhile, Jetstar Pacific Airlines allows a maximum of 05 liters, each bottle not exceeding 01 liter with similar packaging conditions.

Regulations on carry-on baggage on board the plane

Airlines have different regulations on the size, weight and quantity of carry-on baggage allowed on the plane.

Passengers should refer to the regulations on carry-on baggage on the airlines’ websites or contact the airline for this information before departure.

In case the passenger’s carry-on baggage exceeds the size and weight regulations, it will be refused to be brought into the aircraft cabin and must be sent to the aircraft cargo hold, and depending on the regulations of some airlines, passengers may have to pay a deposit for this carry-on baggage.

Passengers are not allowed to carry the following items on their person or in their carry-on luggage, specifically: Explosives, explosive materials (bombs, mines, grenades, explosives, fireworks, etc.); weapons, support tools; flammable substances (gases, liquids, flammable solids, etc.); common items that can be used as threatening weapons (knives, scissors, sharp objects, etc.); items and toys that simulate weapons; sports sticks, camera stands, sticks or umbrella handles with sharp metal tips, etc.).

Passengers on international flights should note the capacity limit of bottles, jars, containers of liquids (water, viscous substances, spray solutions) in their carry-on luggage not exceeding 100 ml, the total volume of liquids that each passenger is allowed to carry is 01 liter. This limit does not apply to liquids that are medicines for the sick, milk, and food for children under certain specific conditions.

Passengers on domestic flights are not restricted from carrying liquids like international flights, however, they should be careful about carrying alcohol and alcoholic liquids (alcohol concentration from 24% to 70%: each person is not allowed to carry more than 5 liters in a container of no more than 5 liters; concentration above 70%: not allowed to carry).

For odorous goods (fish sauce, durian, etc.), airlines do not accept them in carry-on baggage.

Passengers should refer to detailed and specific regulations on liquids, restricted and prohibited objects and items to be carried on the person and in carry-on baggage in Circular 01 and regulations of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam on the website of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (www.caa.gov.vn).
